Mount and format settle it here. Canon EF and Nikon F (AF-S) cover full frame; EF-S and Sigma's DC line are drawn for APS-C only and will not fill a full-frame sensor. Much of this glass also mounts on same-brand mirrorless bodies through the matching adapter.
