Compact 24.2MP APS-C Mirrorless Kit with RF-S 18-45mm Zoom
Overview
The Canon EOS R50 is the lightest way into the RF system: a 24.2MP APS-C body of about 329 g that inherits the DIGIC X processor and the Dual Pixel CMOS AF II autofocus of far more expensive Canon cameras. Supplied here in white with the RF-S 18-45mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM zoom, it is a complete kit rather than a starting point.
Key features
Image quality
- 24.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor: 22.3 x 14.9 mm, with RGB primary colour filter and a fixed low-pass filter.
- DIGIC X processor: the same processing family Canon uses in its professional bodies.
- ISO 100-32000, expandable to H (51200).
Autofocus that tracks by subject
- Dual Pixel CMOS AF II: covers 100% of the frame horizontally and vertically in automatic selection, with up to 651 zones and 4503 focusing positions for stills.
- Subject tracking: humans (eyes, face, head and body), animals (dogs, cats and birds) and vehicles (racing cars and motorcycles).
- Works down to EV -4: focus holds in light where you would expect it to hunt.
Controls and viewing
- 0.39in OLED viewfinder: 2.36 million dots, approx. 100% coverage and 0.95x magnification.
- 7.5 cm (2.95in) touchscreen: approx. 1.62 million dots, with touch AF point selection and touch shutter.
- Built-in flash: guide number 6 (ISO 100, metres), useful as fill without carrying a Speedlite.
Kit lens
- RF-S 18-45mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM: equivalent to roughly 29-72mm on full frame — the everyday range, from a room interior to a head-and-shoulders portrait.
- Optical image stabilisation: the R50 body has no sensor-shift IS, so stabilisation comes from the lens.

What it is good for
- Travel and everyday: a kit that weighs less than most single lenses and still gives you a viewfinder.
- Family and events: eye and face tracking keeps children and pets sharp without you working for it.
- Video and vlogging: the touchscreen and subject detection do the focusing while you talk.
- Coming from a phone: the shortest step up that still gives interchangeable lenses and real autofocus.
