Constant f/2.8 Standard Zoom for Sony APS-C E-Mount
Overview
The Sony E 16-55mm F2.8 G was Sony's first APS-C zoom with a constant F2.8 aperture. It covers 24-82.5mm in full-frame terms, which is the classic standard range, and it holds F2.8 the whole way, so exposure and depth of field stay put as you zoom.
Key features
A constant aperture across the range
- 16-55mm, equivalent to 24-82.5mm on an APS-C body: wide enough for interiors, long enough for a flattering head-and-shoulders portrait.
- Constant F2.8: the exposure does not change as you zoom, and the background separation stays consistent.
G Lens optics
- 17 elements in 12 groups, with two AA (advanced aspherical) and two aspherical elements to hold resolution into the corners.
- Three ED glass elements keep colour fringing down across the range.
- Nano AR Coating suppresses the internal reflections that cause flare and ghosting when you shoot towards the light.
- 9-blade circular aperture for round out-of-focus highlights.
Autofocus and handling
- XD Linear Motor, the same type used in the G Master series: fast, quiet and precise enough to keep up with a modern body.
- 494 g and a 67 mm filter thread, so it balances on compact E-mount bodies instead of dominating them.

What it is good for
- Events and reportage: one lens from the wide shot to the portrait, at a fixed F2.8.
- Indoor work: the constant F2.8 buys a stop and a half over a kit zoom.
- Travel: half a kilo covering the range you use most.
- Video: no exposure shift when you pull the zoom.
