Compact 40mm F2.5 G Prime for Full-Frame E-Mount
Overview
The Sony FE 40mm F2.5 G is 45 mm long and weighs 173 g. It is one of three G primes built to the same size (24mm, 40mm and 50mm), so they share filters, caps and handling. 40mm is the focal length that sits between the reportage 35mm and the classic 50mm, and many photographers find it is the one they stop taking off the camera.
Key features
Small on purpose
- 68 x 45 mm and 173 g: the camera stays pocketable in a jacket.
- 49 mm filter thread, shared with the 24mm and 50mm G primes: one set of filters for all three.
- Aperture ring with a click switch: clicks for stills, silent for video.
G Lens optics in a small barrel
- 9 elements in 9 groups, an unusually simple design that keeps weight and flare down.
- 7-blade circular aperture for round highlights.
- Dust and moisture resistant construction.
Close focus
- 0.28 m in autofocus, 0.25 m in manual, giving 0.2x and 0.23x magnification respectively: close enough for food, detail and product work.
